Description
Tia Tuckia is an Aboriginal homeland community located on two allotments of land approximately 30 kilometres southeast of Ceduna, inland from Laura Bay. The primary role of the organisation is to establish and develop a rural, social and economic base for the extended family of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Champion to allow them to become self-sufficient and self-determined. Key services provided to achieve this goal include:
  • Housing and associated infrastructure
  • Management and administration
  • Development of essential services
  • Creation of employment opportunities, either by way of participation in the Tia Tuckia Community Development Employment Program (CDEP) or through the development of commercial enterprises for the community
  • Creation of training opportunities to raise the skills competencies of community members.
These services are largely provided to members residing in the Tia Tuckia community, but the interests of other family members residing elsewhere, in places such as Port Augusta, Kalgoorlie and Ceduna, are also supported as part of the strategy for keeping the Champion family unit together.

Tia Tuckia has made significant progress since acquiring the land in early 1994. Successes include:
  • Relocating the community from temporary accommodation in caravans into six houses on the property
  • Developing the infrastructure to the level required to support the housing
  • Creating the Tia Tuckia CDEP program and employing over 55 people through this service
  • Constructing a shed and office complex as an administrative base for the community
  • Providing human services, such as support for the disadvantaged in the community including some children
  • Establishing a farming enterprise on the land, and
  • Creating a wildlife park in scrubland on the property.

Overall, progress of the Association has largely been positive due to the determination among members to become self-sufficient and self-determining. One of the key strategies for achieving this has been to insist upon community members participating with contractors so that the skill levels and competencies of members is increased. A future direction for the organisation is to move further towards self-sufficiency by developing more business enterprises such as a fauna park, orchard and a retail outlet.
Our future directions are:
  1. Provide a comprehensive administration centre for the CDEP, housing and other programs at Tia Tuckia (this is seen as a priority for the community, but may not be undertaken until after the period covered by this plan);
  2. Undertake youth sporting development to provide recognition, training and support for younger members to not only improve their skills but build the capacity to undertake sporting competition at regional and State levels (ongoing);
  3. To acquire 14 new houses within 2-3 years.

    At various points throughout this plan it has been identified where the community needs to obtain and include additional information to satisfactorily complete the relevant section.
